Countdown to Spring : Popular Patterns

It's hard to talk about trends in fashion or design without mentioning a few bold patterns that have been showing up all over this Spring.  The arrival of floral patterns seems inevitable but this year we are seeing some really bold and even a little vintage in style, like the ones pictured below.

Of course I can't talk patterns without the fun geometric patterns, often found in Southwest decor or native style design that are popping up everywhere.  This includes the popular chevron and the Ikat that have been extremely popular for the past few years but now we are seeing some modern twists that ever loved horizontal zig-zag.

Finally, the gradient or ombre pattern seems to be peaking this Spring.  It has been mentioned on the Decor8 blog and is seen in different interpretations all over fashion and home furnishings.

Countdown to Spring:Friday DIY {Color meets Pattern}

In honor or our Countdown to Spring: Color Week, I wanted to create a DIY project that encompassed a few of my favorite things: One, these adorable woven containers that I purchased at IKEA a couple months ago.  They have been sitting on my dresser, waiting for a makeover.  Second, I wanted something with some inspiring Spring color.  Last, I wanted an EASY project.  This one only took about 30 min.  The results are so fun... see for yourself.

Here is what you need:
Containers (I couldn't find them on the IKEA website otherwise I would have included a link, sorry)
Broken Crayons
Blow dryer or Iron
Wax paper

Here is what I did:
1.  Soak the crayons in warm water to get the wrappers off
2.  Cut the crayons into small pieces with a kitchen knife

3.  Place the chopped color crayon pieces onto the container in the pattern you would like (keep in mind the colors will run when melted and take on a pattern of their own)
4.  Place the wax paper over the pieces

5.  Put blow dryer on high heat, low speed and hold close to the wax paper.  If you are using an iron place on medium heat.
6.  Watch the colors melt, when they are melted enough so that they sick to the container on their own without getting blown away you can remove the wax paper and continue melting.
7.  You can move the liquified colors in different directions by moving the blow dryer.

Voila!  You have your own, super cool and modern new container.

What do you think?  Did you try it?  Was it fun and easy?  If you did try it, upload your photos to our Facebook page HERE, we would love to see what you came up with.

Count Down to Spring

Today begins our countdown to Spring.  With only two weeks (and 1 day) until the official start of Spring we are going to get you ready.  We are going to touch on Spring trends in fashion and home with a focus on the details like colors, patterns, textures and of course DIY's showing you how to get them for yourself.

Let's start this week off with COLOR.  Color trends run through all areas of design whether it be fashion, home, even cars.  This years Pantone color of the year is Tangerine Tango.

Of course you can find this stunning and vibrant color in nature as in the beautiful blooms and bright crustaceans pictured above.  How about the runway, your neighbors house or your new favorite pair of shoes, (below) aren't those shoes perfect?!

But, if you aren't into committing to something so bold, how about a variation of this red/orange hue.
